Started as a DVD production and media sharing collaboration between the Carnegie Mellon School of Music and myself, the Multimedia Streaming Engine has been a unique multimedia project in development since 2004. I had spoken with Alan Fletcher, the head of the School of Music at the time, and after proposing a number of interesting projects, installed a server in the main performance hall recording room which would in turn become the 21 Productions media server and host of the Multimedia Streaming Engine system. Over the following years, I began developing the system to talk with the Mac OS X Server operating system, using a collection of languages including. Once the system was functional, I worked along with Riccardo Schulz for user interface testing for School of Music faculty, as well as creating and designing the first website to utilize the system, which is now known as The Destination.Originally, its goal was to provide the ability to easily stream School of Music student and ensemble performances live, and has since evolved into a fully featured piece of software allowing automated live streaming, media archiving and advanced subscription and account systems. In addition, it is unique in the fact that the large majority of the system is based on open source software, allowing administrators of the system control it from a web browser on any type of computer and with minimal technical experience. In essence, the Multimedia Streaming Engine is totally versatile piece of software, capable of being controlled from anywhere and use to record performances from anywhere in the world, simultaniously and with ease. Currently, the Multimedia Streaming Engine is a fully operational piece of software, offered as one of several hybrid web/unix system services that 21 Productions utilizes on several client websites.
